How to Know When Your Lancaster County Home Needs Exterior Painting
Pennsylvania weather is tough on house paint. Hot summers, freezing winters, and everything in between means your exterior paint is constantly under attack. Here are the 7 signs that it’s time to call a painter.
1. Peeling or Flaking Paint
When paint peels, bare wood is exposed to moisture — and moisture leads to rot. If you catch it early, we scrape, sand, prime, and repaint. Wait too long, and you’re looking at wood replacement.
2. Fading Colors
Sun-facing walls (south and west sides) fade fastest. If your house looks like two different colors from different angles, the UV protection in your paint has broken down.
3. Chalking
Run your hand along the siding. If it comes away with a white powder, that’s chalking — the paint binder is deteriorating. The surface needs to be power-washed, primed, and repainted.
4. Cracking or Alligatoring
If your paint looks like dried mud or alligator skin, multiple layers of old paint are separating from each other. This requires scraping down to bare wood in many cases.
5. Wood Rot
Press a screwdriver into window sills, door frames, and trim boards. If it sinks in, you’ve got rot. We repair and replace rotted wood before painting — it’s part of our prep process.
6. Gaps in Caulking
Old caulk around windows, doors, and trim shrinks and cracks over time. This lets water behind the paint and into the wall. We remove old caulk and re-caulk every joint as part of every exterior paint job.
7. It Has Been 7+ Years
Even if your paint looks decent from the ground, after 7–10 years in Pennsylvania weather, the protective qualities have degraded. A proactive repaint is cheaper than reactive repairs.
